Paintbrush Studio Blog Hop

 

Hello and welcome to my day on the 2016 Paintbrush Studio New Block Hop.  Paintbrush Studio has generously sponsored this hop featuring their new line of solids seen above, and provided the fabric for our blocks.  Below is my block:

 Flying Kisses Block

Cutting Instructions

For the flying geese,

– 12 small squares of Coral background fabric cut to 1 7/8″ square

– 3 large squares of Bordeaux fabric for the geese themselves cut to 3 1/4″ square

8 White strips 3 3/4″ x 1 1/2″

4 White strips 4 1/2″ x 1 1/3″

1 Light blue Daydream fabric 4 1/2″ square

Midnight background fabric:  (2) 5″ squares, (2) 6″ squares

Piecing Instructions

Place two Coral 1 7/8″ squares on a 3 1/4″ Bordeaux square as shown.

Draw a diagonal line intersecting the two squares.

Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides, and cut down the middle.

Press open.

Place another Coral 1 7/8″ square on the piece as shown.

Draw a line, sew on both sides, cut down the middle and press.

Repeat until you have 12 flying geese.

Sew three geese together, taking care to keep the points. Press. Repeat until you have four sets of three geese.

Sew two White  3 3/4″ by 1/2″ pieces to each side of the flying geese sets. Press and trim to the height of the flying geese set.  Repeat.

Sew a White 4 1/2″ x 1/2″ piece to the pointed end of the flying geese, press and trim to 4 1/2 squared.  Repeat until you have four 4 1/2″ square blocks like this:

Cut the Midnight background squares at a diagonal to make right triangles.

Take the smaller triangles from the 5″ squares.  These will be sewn on the end of the geese blocks.

Line up the points of the Midnight triangle with the centerline of the geese triangles.  Sew to the end of the geese blocks as shown. Press

Trim off the points.

Sew the middle light blue Daydream 4 1/2″ square between two of the geese blocks. Press.

Sew two of the larger triangles from the 6″ squares to both sides of one geese block. Press and repeat with the remaining block.

Line up and pin the three pieces together.  Sew, press, and trim to 12 1/2″ squared.

    Flying geese are one of my favorites because of the interest it adds to a quilt. Great block!

    Ohhh I love me some flying geese!!Your block looks fabulous, and the name is so perfect!! P.S. I had a hard time finding your comment icon! But maybe that isn’t so important these days… people comment much less frequently now than they did even a year ago…

    Such a great block and it has the perfect name! Lots of options with quilting or even fussy cutting in the center square.
